Eighty thousands people suffer from epilepsy in Belgium, in all kind of severity, aetiologies, and presentation.
From a clinical point of view, our centre offers all the tools and techniques for the management of simple and complex epilepsies, including non-invasive pre-surgical evaluation. As such, we have assembled a multidisciplinary team including epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists and psychologists.
Our group also has several research projects, with a particular emphasis on translational studies that have a direct and tangible impact on the management of our patients. The areas concerned range from public health to critical care, including pre-surgical evaluation.

Our research projects
- Real world impact of a commercially available application for electrical source imaging in an epilepsy monitoring unit.
The aim of this project is to evaluate the performance of a commercial application for electrical source imaging in comparison with expert opinion.
- Epilepsy and work (from April 2025):
This project is a collaboration with Mrs Audrey Pielaet, occupational therapist.
This project will study the relationship between epilepsy and access to employment, with a particular interest in the impact of side effects of antiepileptic drugs.
- Development and clinical translation of an EEG-based deep learning tool for predicting seizure recurrence (from October 2025):
This project will be conducted in collaboration with Dr Kenza Lamborelle, MD, and Pr Gilles LOUPPE from the Montefiore Institute of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
The aim of this project is to develop an EEG-based prediction tool after a first non-acute symptomatic seizure using deep learning.
- TELSTAR-2 (awaiting final approval)
